The clamp on rail is indeed a common and important piece of equipment in railway transportation and plays an indispensable role in ensuring the safety and stability of railway transportation.

Typically, there will be one or more rail clamps on each long-travel track. As the name suggests, the clamp on rail works by clamping the rail between jaws, which usually have a serrated pattern carved into the jaw face.

02.

Similar to long-stroke high-speed motor brakes, track clamps are fail-safe because the clamping force is generated by a spring set acting on the connecting rod, providing a significant mechanical advantage. The clamping force is usually released by a hydraulic cylinder, which compresses a spring to release the clamp.

Rail clamp type

There are two different types of rail clamps

Railway Track Clmap

The first and most common, which clamps the sides of the rail head, and the second type, which has a single serrated pressure plate that uses the mass of the machine to push it against the top of the rail head to create the clamping force force.

The second type of clamp is used where certain features of the track prevent the use of the side clamping type, such as tracks embedded in concrete. Push-downs are less efficient because they are limited by the mass available to provide clamping force, and they reduce the braking efficiency of the brake wheel because they eliminate the mass of the brake wheel.

Rail Clamps For Railway

Rail clamp operation

Although rail clamps assist the service brakes, their operation is quite different.

The rail clamps typically remain released for 10 to 15 minutes while the machine is running, and the rail clamp timer resets each time a long-stroke movement is performed. This means that during a period of operation, the rail clamp is not used until the machine has completed its task.

For an emergency stop, the hydraulic system will slow the application of the rail clamp so that the long-throw service brakes can stop the machine within 8 to 10 seconds before the clamp jaws contact the rail. This is because, unlike service brakes that are designed to be used on a moving machine, the track jaws will be damaged if the track is clamped while the machine is still moving.

Typical rail clamp failures

When a clamp on rail does not work properly, it usually means the clamp will provide zero additional restraint to the machine and leave the machine vulnerable to potential accidents.

01

The most common type of rail clamp failure is wear of the jaw serrations, resulting in reduced clamping force or no clamping force at all. Poor rail alignment or worn clamp guide wheels can also cause the jaws to rub along the rails, wearing down the serrations.

Poor rail condition can also lead to reduced clamping effectiveness. The rails may be dirty or greasy, which reduces friction and available clamping resistance. The top edge of the rail head can become rolled up (mushroomed) due to repeated machine passes, causing burrs to form on the edge of the rail head. When the clamp on rail clamps the burr, the jaws engage poorly and there is a risk that the burr will fail due to shearing.
